Still Thinking about Von Trier's Antichrist

Let's get one thing straight from the very beginning: Lars von Trier's Antichrist is a seriously faulty movie, both in its execution as a story and the muddled message it is attempting to convey. I fully understand the heavy criticism the film has received for its misogyny but knowing von Trier I wouldn't take any of it without a heavy dose of salt. The man has a long history of prankster-like behavior, especially when it comes to his audience, so to a large extent - and despite the clear symbolism involved - the film's goriest scenes (both involving genital parts) are really just bad jokes. That said, Antichrist also presents a great field for discussion and mental gymnastics on such topics as "nature as Satan's church" and the host of rich symbols the film presents but fails to exploit to the fullest (how often do you really think about a horror film the day after?). Well, today I found an interesting blog post meditating on the film's symbols against ideas by Feuerbach and Heidegger and while I don't fully agree with what it has to say, it still has my highest recommendations. Note, though, you need to have watched the film before reading the text.

Antichrist - Yet Another Poster!

Honestly, the more I know of Antichrist, the less I want to see it: Lars Von Trier is one sadistic bastard and he's way too good a manipulator to be left to direct. That said, the posters are all amazing and remarkably different so I may yet watch this at great personal risk.

Antichrist Australian Poster

Now this is one violent kiss. The Australian artwork for Lars Von Trier's Antichrist may look like your basic Photoshop at first glance but the concept is both intriguing and revealing which is mark of good art if you ask me.

Antichrist (2009)

Now here comes Lars Von Trier, the auteur I swore I'll never pay attention to again because of his tendency to torment his viewers through the characters he creates. Of course I loved his mini-series The Kingdom, the Nicole Kidman - led sadistic festival known as Dogville and pretty much everything else of his that I've seen, but I simply cannot stand to see another of his delicate creations shredded into pieces just so he can fulfil his artistic vision...

...then again, the trailer for Antichrist, Von Trier's first foray into horror since the second series of The Kingdom, looks way too good to ignore, so who knows? :) Maybe I'll be watching a Von Trier film very, very soon...
